Anthropic resumes billing for selected Claude refusals

Anthropic says it is resuming billing for refusals that arrive before any output in the bio, frontier_llm, and reasoning_extraction categories. Those refusals are charged at the rate of the model that ran; other pre-output refusal categories remain unbilled, and fallback credit is unchanged.

Billing resumes for three refusal categories

Anthropic’s September 24 release note says it is resuming billing for refusals that arrive before any output when the category is bio, frontier_llm, or reasoning_extraction. The note describes these as categories where Anthropic measures low volumes of false positives.

Anthropic says the billed refusals are charged like any other request, at the rate of the model that ran. This applies on all platforms, so the model’s rate determines the charge when a refusal in one of the named categories occurs before output.

Other pre-output refusals remain unbilled

The change does not apply to every refusal before output: Anthropic says refusals in other categories are still not billed. The note also says fallback credit is unchanged. It does not provide a separate price for these refusals; the charge follows the rate of the model that ran.
