Which GPT-4 models leave the API, and when

OpenAI says it notified developers on October 14, 2026 that certain GPT-4 series models are deprecated. They will be removed from the API on January 14, 2027.

The shutdown covers these snapshots: GPT-4o (gpt-4o-2024-08-06 and gpt-4o-2024-11-20), GPT-4o mini (gpt-4o-mini-2024-07-18), GPT-4.1 (gpt-4.1-2025-04-14) and GPT-4.1 mini (gpt-4.1-mini-2025-04-14).

Fine-tuned versions of these models follow the same shutdown schedule as their base models. A fine-tune built on any of the four is therefore also due for removal on January 14, 2027.

Recommended replacement

OpenAI lists gpt-6-luna as the recommended replacement for every model in the table. Any request that names one of these model IDs will need to use a different model before January 14, 2027.

What the notice does not cover

The deprecation entry only covers the OpenAI API. It does not mention ChatGPT or Codex plans. It also does not give gpt-6-luna's price or say whether costs will change after switching.
