Is ChatGPT Pro worth it for Codex?
Only if the Plus five-hour limit stops you most days, even after you move routine work to GPT-6 Luna. Plus is $20 a month with a five-hour limit; Pro is $100, $200 or $500 and currently has none. OpenAI publishes no weekly numbers for any plan and no multiple of Plus for Pro, so a week of your own Codex usage answers this better than any table.
Checked October 2026 against OpenAI's Codex pricing page and its Pro tiers article · By Soren Starck
| Plan | Price | Codex 5-hour limit | Weekly limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plus | $20 a month | Yes. OpenAI estimates 15 to 160 local messages per 5 hours on GPT-6.1 Sol, 350 to 3,000 on GPT-6 Luna | May apply; no number published | Buy credits to keep going after a limit |
| Pro 100 | $100 a month | None for now | No number published | Pro models, longer Codex sessions; credits after the included usage |
| Pro 200 | $200 a month | None for now | No number published | More usage than Pro 100; new subscriptions since 29 September 2026 get a lower allowance than before |
| Pro 500 | $500 a month | None for now | No number published | The most included usage, and the only Pro plan with GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast |
| Business | $25 per user a month, or $20 billed annually (2 users minimum) | Yes, the same estimates as Plus (Standard Business) | May apply; no number published | Admin controls, SAML SSO, no training on business data by default |
Message counts are OpenAI's estimates, not fixed limits; larger projects and long-running tasks use more per message, and cloud tasks can use more than local ones. Pro is billed monthly only. API-key pricing and the older tiers are in how much Codex costs.
On Windows? Codex usage in the Windows taskbar: the same Plus or Pro limits, live on Windows 10 and 11.
What changed in late September
- 22 September: GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. They rolled out in Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu (Codex changelog), with Luna also in the desktop app for Free and Go. OpenAI cut their API prices in half against GPT-5.6's promotional pricing and described the release as higher usage limits and lower cost. On OpenAI's Codex rate card, GPT-6 Sol costs 50 credits per million input tokens and 250 per million output, half of GPT-5.6 Sol's 100 and 500.
- 29 September: GPT-6.1 Sol, and a new Pro 200 allowance. GPT-6.1 Sol arrived in the API the same day (API changelog) and began rolling out in Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. The same day OpenAI lowered the included usage for new Pro 200 subscriptions and kept the price at $200. Pro 500, with GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast, is the newest tier.
- 14 October: GPT-5.5 leaves Codex on every plan. Saved model settings that still pick it need a new choice.
The practical effect for a Plus subscriber: the same $20 now buys work on cheaper models, and the gap between models is large. OpenAI's own five-hour estimates put Luna at roughly 19 to 23 times as many local messages as GPT-6.1 Sol. A Plus plan that ran out on Sol may last on a Sol and Luna mix, which is worth testing before paying five times as much.
Who needs Pro, and which one
- Stay on Plus if the five-hour limit stops you once or twice a week. Wait for the reset, or buy credits, which kick in only after your included usage and stay valid for 12 months. OpenAI does not publish one price per credit; amounts and prices vary by account and region.
- Pro 100 if the five-hour limit stops you most working days on Plus, after routine work has moved to Luna. It removes the five-hour limit, for now.
- Pro 200 if Pro 100's allowance runs out before the week does. OpenAI says only that it includes more usage than Pro 100, so move up on evidence rather than on an assumed multiple.
- Pro 500 if you need GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast, or the most included usage of the Pro plans. Ultrafast draws your allowance at 8 times the Standard rate.
- Business for a team that needs admin controls and SSO. Per seat it has the same five-hour estimates as Plus, so it is not a way to get more Codex.
How to decide with your own numbers
OpenAI points everyone to the same two places for their real limits: chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage and /status in the Codex CLI. Both show where you are when you look. For a plan decision you need the pattern across a normal week:
- Count the days the five-hour limit stopped you, and how far into the window it happened.
- Note where the weekly limit stood by midweek. Pro removes the five-hour limit for now; OpenAI does not say it removes weekly limits.
- Run one day with Luna for routine tasks (tests, small refactors, lookups) and Sol for the hard ones, and compare.
- Decide: stopped most days after the switch is a Pro 100 pattern; stopped once or twice is a Plus-and-credits pattern.
SessionWatcher keeps that week on screen: the five-hour and weekly limits OpenAI reports, how fast you are using them, and when each resets, in the Mac menu bar or Windows taskbar, with alerts before a limit hits. On a Mac it also shows any banked resets you hold and when they expire. The trial is free for 7 days with no card: one normal week of Codex, then pick the plan with real numbers. How the two Codex limits work is in the Codex 5-hour limit, explained.

Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT Pro worth it for Codex?
If the Plus five-hour limit stops you most working days even after you move routine tasks to GPT-6 Luna, yes: Pro starts at $100 a month and Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit. If you hit the Plus limit once or twice a week, waiting for the reset or buying credits on Plus is a smaller commitment than the $80 step. OpenAI publishes no weekly numbers for any plan, so a week of your own usage is the evidence that decides it.
Does ChatGPT Pro have a Codex 5-hour limit?
Not at the moment. OpenAI’s Codex pricing page says Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit, while Plus and Standard Business do. Weekly limits may still apply on every plan, and OpenAI’s Pro help article says model allowances vary by tier and a model can be unavailable until its allowance resets.
How many Codex messages do I get on ChatGPT Plus?
OpenAI gives estimates per five hours rather than a fixed number: 5 to 45 local messages on GPT-6 Astra, 15 to 160 on GPT-6.1 Sol, 15 to 150 on GPT-6 Sol and 350 to 3,000 on GPT-6 Luna, the same for Standard Business. Cloud tasks can use more of the allowance than local messages.
What did GPT-6 Sol and Luna change for Codex?
They rolled out in Codex from 22 September 2026 for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, with Luna also in the desktop app for Free and Go. Their credit rates are half those of GPT-5.6 Sol, and OpenAI described the release as higher usage limits and lower cost. GPT-6.1 Sol followed on 29 September, and GPT-5.5 leaves Codex on 14 October 2026.
Is Pro 200 still worth it over Pro 100?
Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100, but OpenAI does not say how much more, and new Pro 200 subscriptions since 29 September 2026 get a lower allowance than before. If you held Pro 200 at any point from 22 September to 29 September 2026, 10 a.m. Pacific, you keep the previous allowance through 29 October 2026. Start on Pro 100 and move up only if its allowance runs out.
Is ChatGPT Business better than Plus for Codex?
Not for headroom. Standard Business has the same five-hour estimates per seat as Plus. It adds a shared workspace, admin controls, SAML SSO and no training on business data by default, at $25 per user a month or $20 billed annually for two or more users.
