Is Claude Max worth it?
Only if Pro's limits are what stops you. Max costs $100 a month for five times Pro's usage per 5-hour session, or $200 for twenty times. Anthropic does not publish message counts, so nobody can answer this from the outside: a week of your own usage can.

| Plan | Price | Usage per 5-hour session | Fable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20 a month, or $17 billed annually | At least 5x Free | Through usage credits only |
| Max 5x | $100 a month | 5x Pro | Included, within 50% of the weekly limits |
| Max 20x | $200 a month | 20x Pro | Included, within 50% of the weekly limits |
Every paid plan also has a weekly limit across all models, on a fixed schedule. The reset schedule is the same on Pro and Max. Team and API prices are in Claude Code pricing; every row side by side, Max 5x against Max 20x included, is in Claude Pro vs Max.
What Opus 5.5 changed
Two things moved in late September. Anthropic's Opus 5.5 announcement says 5-hour usage limits are going up on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, without giving the new amounts or a date, and that subscribers get a reset they can save and use when they choose. And Claude Code v2.1.280 made Opus the default model on Pro and Team Standard, where it used to be Sonnet.
So a Pro-or-Max decision made before October was made on different numbers: the 5-hour limits are being raised, and Pro now starts Claude Code on Opus. One more reason to look at a current week rather than an old one.
How to decide from your own usage
- Look at a normal week, not your worst afternoon. Settings > Usage on claude.ai, or
/usagein Claude Code, shows how much of the current session and of the week you have used. - Count what stopped you. The 5-hour session most days, or the weekly limit before the week was out: Max 5x is the step to consider. Neither, or once: stay on Pro.
- Pick between 5x and 20x by how you work. Max 20x costs twice as much as Max 5x for four times the usage per session. It fits people who run Claude Code all day, often in several sessions at once.
- Check the weekly limit too. A bigger session allowance does not help if the week runs out first; every paid plan has one.
How the two limits work is in Claude's 5-hour and weekly limits, and when each one comes back is in when does Claude reset.
Measure a week before you choose
Settings > Usage tells you where you are when you look. What decides the plan is the pattern: how close you came each session, and on which day the weekly limit ran out. SessionWatcher keeps both limits in your Mac menu bar or Windows taskbar and keeps a 7-day history with your pace, so after a week the answer is on screen. The trial is free for 7 days with no card, which is exactly one week of evidence. If it shows you never get close, you have saved $80 a month, and you do not need us either.
Measure your real Claude usage for a week
Free for 7 days, no credit card. Then decide on Pro or Max with your own numbers.
Prices go up Nov 1, midnight Paris time. Prices go up Nov 1
On Windows? Claude usage in the Windows taskbar: the same trial works on Windows 10 and 11.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Max worth it?
If Pro’s limits stop you most weeks, yes: Max 5x gives five times Pro’s usage per 5-hour session for $100 a month, and Max 20x twenty times for $200. If you rarely hit a limit on Pro, it is not. Anthropic does not publish message counts, so the way to know is to look at your own usage for a week.
How much is Claude Max?
Max 5x is $100 a month and Max 20x is $200 a month, both billed monthly. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually. Prices from claude.com/pricing.
What is the difference between Claude Pro and Max usage limits?
Anthropic sets usage per 5-hour session: Max 5x gets five times Pro’s and Max 20x twenty times. Every paid plan also has a weekly limit across all models. Max includes Fable within 50% of its weekly limits; Pro reaches Fable only through usage credits.
Does Max make my limit reset sooner?
No. The 5-hour session and the weekly limit reset on the same schedule on every paid plan. Max gives more usage before you reach them.
Did Opus 5.5 change the limits?
Anthropic says it is raising 5-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, without giving the new amounts or a date, and that subscribers get a reset they can save and use when they choose. Separately, Claude Code v2.1.280 made Opus the default model on Pro and Team Standard.
