Claude Pro vs Max, side by side

Pro is $20 a month. Max is $100 for five times Pro's usage per 5-hour session, or $200 for twenty times. All three include Claude Code and Opus, all three have a weekly limit, and all three got higher 5-hour limits with Opus 5.5. What actually separates them: headroom per session, Fable, and billing, since Max is monthly only.

“Pro-sized sessions per $20” is our arithmetic on Anthropic's multiples at monthly prices, not an Anthropic figure. Anthropic publishes no message or token counts and no weekly limit sizes for any plan. Team and API prices are in Claude Code pricing.

On Windows? Claude usage in the Windows taskbar: the same Pro or Max limits, live on Windows 10 and 11.

What Opus 5.5 changed for both plans

On 22 September 2026 Anthropic's Opus 5.5 announcement said it is increasing five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, without saying by how much, and gave subscribers a limit reset to save and use when they choose. The relative sizes did not move: claude.com/pricing still says Max gives 5x or 20x Pro's usage per 5-hour session. So the comparison below holds; what changed is the absolute amount behind each multiple, which nobody outside Anthropic can state.

Pro vs Max 5x

The step is $100 against $20: five times the price for five times the usage per session, so per dollar the session allowance is the same. What the extra $80 buys is room: if a Claude Code session on Pro runs out of allowance before its five hours are up, Max 5x gives the same session five times as much. It also adds Fable, within half of your weekly limits, which Pro only reaches by paying for usage credits.

The other side of the step is billing. Pro can be paid yearly at $17 a month; Max cannot. That makes Max easy to try for one month and drop, and Anthropic credits your account if you move to Max from an annual Pro plan whose remaining balance is worth more than the Max price.

Max 5x vs Max 20x

Max 20x costs twice as much as Max 5x for four times the usage per session. It is the only plan of the three where a dollar buys more session allowance: two Pro-sized sessions per $20, against one on Pro and Max 5x. That only pays off if you use it, and the weekly limit is the catch: every paid plan has one, Anthropic does not publish its size, and it does not say that it scales by 20x. Someone who runs several Claude Code sessions in parallel all day is who Max 20x is for. Someone who hits the 5-hour limit on Max 5x once or twice a week is usually better served by waiting for the reset or using the saved one.

The saved reset, and changing plans

Anthropic's limit reset article says a reset puts either your 5-hour session limit or your weekly limit back to full straight away, depending on the reset you hold. Your weekly limit still resets on its usual day and time, a used reset cannot be undone, and an unused one expires on the date shown in Settings > Usage. Two rules matter when you compare plans:

  • Downgrading or cancelling loses an unused reset. Moving from Max to Pro? Use it first.
  • You can only apply it in a browser or Claude Desktop. The “Reset for free” button is in Settings > Usage and on the limit message, not in Claude Code in the terminal or on Claude Mobile. Once applied, the reset counts everywhere, Claude Code included.

When you hit a limit on any of the three plans you can also turn on usage credits, billed at API rates with a monthly cap you set. A few credit-funded hours a month can cost less than the jump to the next plan; a few every day will not.

How to decide with your own numbers

Because Anthropic gives multiples rather than counts, the comparison above tells you the ratios and your own usage tells you which ratio you need. Settings > Usage on claude.ai, or /usage in Claude Code, shows the current session and the week. Over a normal week, note three things:

  1. How often the 5-hour limit stopped you, and how early. Out of allowance two hours into a five-hour session most days is a Max 5x pattern. Out of allowance within the first hour while several sessions run is a Max 20x pattern.
  2. Where the weekly limit stood halfway through your week. Well past half by then means a bigger session allowance alone will not carry you to the weekly reset.
  3. Whether you needed Fable. On Pro it costs usage credits; on Max it is included within half the weekly limits.

SessionWatcher records that week for you: both limits live in your Mac menu bar or Windows taskbar, with your pace through the session and the time each limit resets, plus a 7-day history and alerts at 70% and 90% by default. The trial is free for 7 days with no card, which is one full week of evidence before you change plans. The full method, and what to do if the numbers say stay on Pro, is in is Claude Max worth it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Claude Pro and Max?

Usage per 5-hour session, Fable and billing. Max 5x gives five times Pro’s usage per 5-hour session for $100 a month and Max 20x twenty times for $200; Pro is $20, or $17 a month billed annually. Max includes Fable within 50% of its weekly limits, while Pro reaches Fable only through usage credits. Max is billed monthly only. All three include Claude Code and Opus, and all three have a weekly limit across all models.

Is Max 20x worth twice the price of Max 5x?

Per 5-hour session it is the better deal: twice the price for four times the usage, which is two Pro-sized sessions per $20 against one on Pro and Max 5x. Anthropic does not publish the size of either weekly limit, so whether the extra session headroom survives a full week is something only your own usage shows.

Do Pro and Max have the same weekly limit?

Both have one. Anthropic says each paid plan has a weekly limit that applies across all models and resets at a fixed time assigned to your account, but it does not publish how large the weekly limit is on any plan, or whether it scales by the same 5x and 20x as the session allowance.

Did Opus 5.5 change the Pro and Max limits?

Anthropic said on 22 September 2026 that it is increasing five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, without giving the new amounts, and that subscribers get a limit reset they can save and use when they choose. claude.com/pricing still gives Max 5x or 20x Pro’s usage per 5-hour session.

What happens to my saved limit reset if I switch from Max to Pro?

You lose it. Anthropic’s help article says a reset you have not used is no longer available if you downgrade or cancel. Use it first, from Settings > Usage on the web or in Claude Desktop; the button is not in Claude Code in the terminal or on mobile.

Can I pay for Claude Max annually?

No. Max is a monthly subscription only; Pro is the plan with annual billing ($17 a month, $200 up front). Moving from annual Pro to Max gives you an account credit if the rest of your Pro year is worth more than the Max price.
