AI Coding Usage Tracking for Teams

Once a team runs on Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or Copilot, usage limits stop being one person's problem. Someone gets locked out halfway through a migration, someone else burns the weekly cap by Wednesday, and nobody saw it coming. This guide separates the two questions a team actually has, and where each answer lives.

Two questions, two places

QuestionWho asksWhere the answer lives
What is the company spending on AI tools?Finance, engineering managersEach provider's admin and billing console
Will I hit my limit before this task is done?Every developer, many times a dayThe limits on their own account, which only help if they are in view while working
Which tool should I switch to for the next hour?Developers using more than one toolOne view across every tool they use

Admin consoles are built for the first question and they are the right tool for it. They are not in front of the developer at 4pm when a long agent run is about to hit the 5-hour window. Subscription limits such as Claude Code's session and weekly windows apply to each person's account, so the warning has to reach that person.

What a lockout costs a team

A developer who hits a rolling limit mid-task either waits for the reset or switches context, and usually loses the thread either way. Across a team that happens weekly. Seen that way, per-developer visibility is cheap insurance: at $40 a seat per year, SessionWatcher costs less than an hour of an engineer's time, and it earns that back the first time someone sees 85% and paces the task instead of stalling at 100%.

The options, from free to paid

  1. Provider admin consoles. Included with business plans. The source of truth for spend and seat management; not a live view for the developer mid-task.
  2. Each developer checks by hand. /usage in Claude Code, /status in Codex, the Cursor and GitHub dashboards. Free, and it works when people remember. The lockouts happen when they don't.
  3. Free per-developer tools. CLIs such as ccusage, and tray apps covering one or a few tools. Fine for individuals; on a team, everyone ends up with a different tool, and nothing is supported or billed centrally.
  4. SessionWatcher Pro for Teams. The same always-visible app for everyone, per seat, on one invoice. Details below.

How SessionWatcher Pro for Teams works

  • $40 per seat per year, or $4 per month, with a 3-seat minimum. $400 a year covers 10 developers.
  • Each seat is SessionWatcher Pro for one person: all 20 tools, several Claude and Codex accounts, notifications before limits, and usage history, on up to 2 Macs.
  • One subscription and one invoice for every seat, with your billing address and tax ID. Invoices before payment on request.
  • Keys arrive by email, with a CSV, the moment payment clears. Seats belong to the company and can be reassigned when someone leaves.
  • It reads each developer's own logins, so it shows the limits of whatever account they sign in with. Nothing to configure, no API keys for Claude Code, Codex or Cursor.
  • Not a central dashboard: each person sees their own usage, and nothing is collected for the company. That also keeps a security review short.
  • Macs only for now. SessionWatcher itself also runs on Windows; for a Windows team, email contact@sessionwatcher.com.

See Pro for Teams and buy seats

A one-afternoon rollout

  1. Count the people on Macs who use AI coding tools daily. That is your seat count.
  2. Buy the seats at sessionwatcher.com/teams, yearly or monthly.
  3. Send each person their key from the CSV.
  4. They install it: the DMG from the download page, or brew install --cask sessionwatcher, which suits scripted setups.
  5. They paste their key. SessionWatcher finds the tools they already use.
  6. When someone leaves, reassign their seat to the next hire.

Personal licence or Teams?

The line is who pays. Solo, Bundle and Pro are for individuals buying with their own money, including for freelance and client work. If the company buys it, or reimburses it, the terms ask for Pro for Teams with a seat per person. Licences bought before September 27, 2026 keep working as purchased.

Frequently asked questions

How do you track AI coding tool usage across a team?

In two places, because there are two questions. The company’s question, what are we spending, is answered by each provider’s admin and billing console. Each developer’s question, how much of my own limit is left before this task finishes, is answered on their own machine, ideally somewhere they can see it without stopping work. SessionWatcher Pro for Teams covers the second: every developer gets the same always-visible readout for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, Gemini CLI and 15 more tools, bought per seat on one invoice.

Can managers see each developer’s usage in SessionWatcher?

No. SessionWatcher shows each person their own usage on their own machine and does not collect it centrally, so there is no manager view. For company-wide spend, use your AI providers’ admin consoles.

How much does SessionWatcher cost for a team?

Pro for Teams is $40 per seat per year, or $4 per seat per month, with a 3-seat minimum. That is $400 a year for 10 developers, $1,000 for 25 and $2,000 for 50.

Can employees expense a personal SessionWatcher licence instead?

SessionWatcher’s terms say no: when a company buys the app for staff or reimburses them for it, it needs Pro for Teams, with a seat per person. Personal licences are for individuals paying their own way, freelance and client work included.

Does SessionWatcher send our usage data anywhere?

Usage is read and displayed on each developer’s machine; SessionWatcher does not read code or conversations. Licence validation sends the licence key and device details to SessionWatcher, and some tools’ usage is fetched from that provider’s own API, from the developer’s machine.

Does Pro for Teams work on Windows?

Not yet. SessionWatcher runs on Windows, but Pro for Teams seats cover Macs only for now. Teams on Windows can email contact@sessionwatcher.com.
